May Tian

May Tian is a musical girl. Born in Beijing, China, she embarked on a musical journey that started at the tender age of 4 when she received her first Steinway piano as her birthday gift from her mom. After moving to Vancouver, Canada, her musical prowess expanded as she delved into the realms of cello, percussion, singing, and composition, establishing a diverse and rich foundation that would define her future in the world of music.

 

Her recent accomplishments include: Steinway Competition Winners Concert at Carnegie Weill Hall in October 2023, Gold Award in Steinway Piano Competition Canada 2023, and Steinway Spirio | r Concerto Competition Canada 2023 Gold Award, she achieved First Class Honours for RCM Elementary Piano Pedagogy in January 2023, First Class Honours in RCM ARCT Piano Diploma in 2022, First Class Honours in Level 10 Cello in 2021, RCM ARCT Analysis, ARCT Harmony & Counterpoint, and ARCT History in 2021, as well as First Class Honours in Level 10 Piano in 2019.

 

May has achieved remarkable milestones. At the age of 4, she graced the stage of CCTV with her ballet performance. By age 6, she had already hosted a large-scale variety show alongside renowned hosts on CCTV. Her talents were further highlighted as she performed at the Zhongshan Music Hall Awards concert for piano at the age of 7 and mesmerized audiences with her singing alongside Zhang Weiliang at the National Center for the Performing Arts at the age of 8. Her musical journey reached new heights when she joined the Pre-Junior Orchestra at the Vancouver Academy of Music at the age of 10, a few months later, she jumped to the intermediate orchestra, quickly ascending to the role of principal cellist in the VAM Intermediate Orchestra by the age of 12. Now as a current cellist in the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, performing over 8 concerts annually in the Orpheum Theatre, and Kay Meek Arts Centre, fostering a deep sense of collaboration, enthusiasm, determination, perseverance, and respect. To date, she has delivered over 250 captivating performances. May cherishes every experience, viewing each achievement as a testament to the power of persistence and a stepping stone towards future success.

 

She currently studies piano with Ian Parker, and cello with Joseph Elworthy. Her recent piano teachers include: Dr. Noel McRobbie, Scott Meek, and Hua Chang. She is not only an exceptional music student, but is also a dedicated piano teacher, a role she has embraced since May 2023. Through her teaching endeavours, she has discovered a new dimension of her musical abilities, nurturing the potential of her students and imparting her profound love and knowledge of music to aspiring young talents. May's passion for teaching has enabled her to foster a nurturing and inspiring learning environment, where her students not only acquire technical proficiency but also cultivate a deep appreciation for the art of music.

 

Currently attending Grade 11 at Crofton House School, where she discovered her passion for chemistry, anatomy & physiology, biology, mathematics, digital film and drama. She also enjoys roller skating, playing badminton, basketball, and swimming during her free time.

 

May's passion for music has only intensified, motivating her to explore the limitless possibilities within the music world. With a deep-seated belief that music is not just a form of expression but a way of life, May is committed to creating and sharing original music compositions that touch the hearts of her ever-growing fan base. Her aspiration is to spread joy and evoke profound emotions through her musical creations, leaving an indelible mark on the world stage.

 

May was also the founder of the May Music Club, where like-minded young musicians continued to join her. Together, they helped and taught children who love music on a voluntary basis.  She is committed to opening the door to music for more children and leading them further and further down the road of music.
